Positive / Negative

Best in category recipients @ RIT EDU. Winner of Platinum Award at the 40th Annual Creativity Print and Packaging Competition, Positive Negative magazine is an annual publication created by the CIAS students at Rochester Institute of Technology. For the 2010 publication, I was elected to be Co-Art Director - one of my first real chances in the design world & (clearly) I was instantly hooked. Here is a selection of a few of the spreads in the magazine, including behind the scenes shots from the production of the cover images.

“We admit it. When we first started this publication we had no idea how it would turn out. We were a mix of nineteen photographers, eighteen graphic designers, a peer selected staff of 15 students and two very different professors. Our personalities ranged from the eccentric designer to the tech-monkey photographer; the still life enthusiast to the illustrator at heart. Our subject was flexible, simply positive or negative focuses. Each of us wanted to soak in the creative opportunities and let our imaginations run wild. With such a medley of styles, it was hard to imagine anything but a mess of pure chaos.

It’s incredible to see just how far we’ve come since our first week now that all of the different pieces have fallen into place. Like positive and negative, we found ourselves to be complete opposites at times. It wasn’t until we realized that by using our different talents together as one, we could create something more dynamic than we could have ever imagined. We have learned so much about the beauty of opposites, and that to fully understand one extreme you must also understand the other. From the sleek graphic cube on the front, to the under construction lightbox on the back, we are photographers and designers at our core. In the end, we didn’t only get to be who we wanted to be, but we were able to create something much larger than ourselves."
